UNFPA led and developed the quality specifications for menstrual health products with support from UNICEF and UNHCR on behalf of the Menstrual Hygiene Management in Emergencies (MHMiE) working group.
In an effort to increase the quality and variety of menstrual products offered by humanitarian actors, the agencies can now offer quality-assured disposable menstrual pads, reusable menstrual pads, and menstrual cups. The products can be procured as standalone items and/or as part of the dignity kits.
Some menstrual products in the market include fragrances/scents, which can be made from a cocktail of up to 3,900 chemicals, some of them are identified as carcinogens, neurotoxins, irritants, hormone disruptors, and reproductive toxicants.
That is why these specifications take quality to another level, guaranteeing unscented products in all categories and ensuring women and girls in humanitarian settings can access a variety of quality-assured menstrual products.
