Since 2016, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria have partnered to reduce HIV infections, unintended pregnancies and STIs by providing quality-assured condoms at competitive prices.
In 2022, the partnership provided a record number of orders, including the procurement of 390 million male condoms, 3.5 million female condoms, and more than 178 million lubricant sachets. The orders, with a total value of more than US $34 million, reached people in 46 countries.
Through increased procurement volumes, the partnership has increased access to quality-assured health supplies while also saving costs. It is estimated that the number of male condoms procured in 2022 can provide almost 3 million couples with a full year of protection.
“The Global Fund and UNFPA partnership showcase true collaboration for impact and is a great example of how to leverage pooled engagement with markets to achieve the best possible access to save lives,” said Azizkhon Jafarov, a Global Sourcing Health Technologies Manager in the Global Fund’s Supply Operations Department.
“Our efforts and partnership have caused real impact against HIV all over the world. Delivering quality-assured products to the Global Fund’s implementing partners across regions means that millions of potential HIV infections have been prevented each year,” said Leopoldo Sierra, Global Fund Operations Lead at UNFPA Supply Chain Management Unit.
Number of countries involved nearly doubles
Over the past five years, the number of countries involved in the UNFPA and Global Fund procurement work has nearly doubled, from 29 countries in 2018 to 46 in 2022. The 46 countries span across Africa, Asia & Pacific, the Americas, the Middle East, and Europe. The five countries that received the highest value of supplies in 2022 were Nigeria, Malawi, Mozambique, Haiti, and Zambia.
