Anatomical birth models support midwifery trainings in Rwanda

Anatomical birth models are realistic educational tools to simulate birth experiences, helping nurses to gain important midwifery skills to support deliveries through all stages of childbirth.

Well-trained midwives prevent maternal deaths and protect the health and dignity of women & their families worldwide. In partnership with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health, UNFPA distributed anatomical models for midwifery simulation training across six educational institutions in Rwanda.

Anatomical birth models are realistic educational tools to simulate birth experiences, helping nurses to gain important midwifery skills to support deliveries through all stages of childbirth.

“There are theories that are taught without equipment, but when a student is able to practice with tangible materials, they are better able to retain knowledge and apply it effectively to real patients," said Valentine Kbahire, Simulation Lab Manager.

The anatomical birth models are essential for the students to gain practical experience in addition to their theoretical perspectives.

“Since we are following a programme where we need more practice, the equipment is very helpful for our studies,” said Ishimwe Kayumba, Nurse Student.

In Rwanda, the simulation training can reduce preventable maternal deaths by providing nursing students with the necessary skills and experience to support safe childbirths.
