In August, floods in the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states of Nigeria affected over 186,000 people, with women and adolescent girls making up 68% of those impacted. Combined with the ongoing crisis in North-East Nigeria, the floods have displaced many women and girls, increased protection risks, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, including maternal care. Additionally, prolonged armed conflict in the BAY states, and inter-communal clashes in Benue, have displaced 3,490 people, exacerbating protection challenges and hindering SRH services in IDP camps. In Yobe, insecurity from non-state armed groups has displaced 2,390 individuals, mostly women and adolescent girls, increasing their exposure to GBV, human rights violations, and limited health care access. UNFPA Nigeria continues to prioritise SRH and GBV services in these regions.

UNFPA is actively implementing activities in 39 local government authorities (LGAs) across the BAY states, reaching 20,237 individuals with SRH services, including antenatal care, assisted births, HIV/STI treatment, and family planning. Additionally, 376,247 individuals received GBV services, including medical care, psychosocial support, and legal assistance. In partnership with local organisations, UNFPA conducted workshops to strengthen GBV referral pathways and is completing the construction of a women and girls safe space in Plateau State. UNFPA also distributed 5,581 dignity kits to women and girls in conflict and flood-affected areas and raised GBV awareness among 480,553 individuals. Capacity-building initiatives also trained 3,393 GBV service providers and action groups across the BAY states.

UNFPA Nigeria requires US$ 20.9 million to fund the humanitarian response plan in 2024, only 31% of which has been mobilised to date.
