On 27 September, a wave of airstrikes targeted Hezbollah's stronghold in Beirut, leading to the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other high-ranking officials. This marked a significant escalation in the conflict, with widespread airstrikes and the largest internal displacement in Lebanon's history, affecting over 1 million people. Among the displaced, 211,300 have been formally registered, with a significant portion being women and girls, including thousands of pregnant women. Displaced individuals have sought refuge in collective shelters, many of which are now full, while others are living in cars or the streets. Over 100,000 have fled into Syria for safety.
UNFPA is actively responding to the crisis by distributing dignity kits and providing gender-based violence (GBV) protection, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, and psychological support in various shelters across Lebanon. Mobile units and primary healthcare centers are temporarily closed due to security concerns, but partners are ready to resume services when possible. UNFPA has already dispatched life-saving medical supplies to hospitals to ensure safe births and is coordinating efforts with local authorities to address the urgent needs of displaced populations.
UNFPA requires US$ 8 million under the Lebanon Flash Appeal to support 300,000 people with essential SRH and GBV services.
