Bangladesh Situation Report #2 - September 2024

The eastern region of Bangladesh is grappling with severe flooding that has impacted over 5.8 million people and displaced more than 500,000, who are now seeking refuge in overcrowded evacuation centres. Women and girls face unique, often unspoken challenges, including increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV), lack of privacy, inadequate sanitation and lighting facilities, and limited access to essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The overwhelmed local administration and reduced presence of officials and service providers have further hindered their ability to report incidents or access support.

In response, UNFPA completed the first phase of its immediate relief efforts and is continuing its work in the most affected areas. From August 31 to September 5, UNFPA conducted an emergency field mission in Noakhali and Feni to assess GBV and SRH needs. The mission highlighted the necessity for enhanced disaster response coordination, targeted relief for vulnerable groups, and training for volunteers on GBV principles to mitigate risks. The Humanitarian Advisory Group agreed to revise the existing Humanitarian Response Plan to address these emerging needs, and UN agencies are collaborating with government authorities to strengthen coordinated humanitarian efforts.

UNFPA estimates US$ 4.92 million is required to reach its target population of 90,500 women, pregnant women, and adolescent girls, including gender diverse population and people with disabilities. To date, only US$0.24 million (4.8%) has been mobilised.
