UNFPA to promote family planning, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights during UN General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS, New York – During the 73rd United Nations General Assembly, UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, will organize side events to highlight the importance of family planning, gender equality, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. These include:

Tuesday, 18 September

Family planning: a human right and key to addressing the humanitarian-development- peace nexus
• 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
• Conference Room 11, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• The event will discuss how family planning can be a catalyst for global development. A publication, entitled Reaching the last mile- even in a crisis, will be launched.

Thursday, 20 September

Strengthening national geospatial capacity and geo-referenced population data: Geo- Referenced Infrastructure and Demographic Data for Development (GRID)
• 1:15 p.m.–2:30 p.m.
• Conference Room 6, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• The event will highlight the innovative actions underway in three countries to improve census and geospatial data in support of sustainable development.

Keeping the faith in sustainable peace: women of faith as agents of transformation
• 1:15 p.m.–2:45 p.m.
• Conference Room 1, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• Women from multiple faith communities will discuss their role as agents of peace and social transformation, and how this can contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Monday, 24 September

Protecting the health and rights of women and girls affected by conflict: focus on Yemen and South Sudan
1:15 p.m.–2:30 p.m.
• Conference Room 2, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• The event, featuring the UNFPA Patron, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, will highlight the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights for conflict-affected women and girls.

A world free of cervical cancer
• 1:15 p.m.–2:30 p.m.
• Conference Room 7, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• Heads of state, first ladies, and heads of UN agencies and civil society will discuss the commitments national governments must make to help eliminate cervical cancer.

Women and young persons with disabilities: a programme for equal opportunities and a life free of violence
• 3:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
• Grand Hyatt Hotel, 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue
• A programme will be launched to promote the human rights and social inclusion of adolescents and young people living with disabilities.

Tuesday, 25 September

Women and children on the move: A call to protect
• 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m.
• Conference Room 11, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• The panel, which will include UNFPA Patron, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, will focus on the rights violations suffered by refugee and migrant women and girls.

Wednesday, 26 September

High-Level roundtable on child marriage in Africa
• 1:15 p.m.–2:30 p.m.
• Conference Room 9, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• Governments, heads of state, the African Union and development partners will discuss and renew efforts to end child, early, and forced marriage across Africa.

Thursday, 27 September

Safe Birth, Even Here: saving the lives of mothers in humanitarian and fragile settings – the case of Haiti and post-Ebola Liberia
• 5 p.m.–6:30 p.m.
• Convene, 273 Park Avenue, New York
• Organized with Johnson & Johnson, the event will highlight outcomes of the Safe Birth Even Here campaign and its ability to decrease maternal death in Liberia and Haiti.

High-level panel on female genital mutilation
• 6 p.m.–7:30 p.m.
• Conference Room 3, United Nations Secretariat, New York
• The panel will launch of the third phase of the UNFPA-UNICEF programme to prevent female genital mutilation. Governments, UN agencies and Civil Society Organizations will discuss future initiatives.
