Statement by UNFPA

15 October 2021

UNFPA is aware of the audio recordings circulating on social media that call into question the impartiality of the United Nations humanitarian response in Ethiopia.

All UNFPA staff are bound by the United Nations standards of impartiality, independence and neutrality, which are vital to our work delivering for all the people we serve – no matter who or where they are.

Senior leadership is deeply concerned with these recent developments. UNFPA’s Representative to Ethiopia has been called back to New York for further discussions. The matter will be considered in accordance with applicable United Nations and UNFPA regulations, rules and policies, and with full regard for due process.

UNFPA is on the ground in Ethiopia, dedicated to meeting the urgent health and protection needs of women and girls across the country. Our priority remains to uphold all women's and girls’ rights to a safe and dignified birth and to live free from violence, and our mission continues unabated.
