Call for Nominations for the 2008 United Nations Population Award

UNITED NATIONS, New York — Each spring for the last quarter century, the United Nations Population Award has recognized outstanding contributions to the field of population and development.

The Award, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly, has paid tribute to a long list of distinguished laureates and their impact on development thinking and processes. The Award has honoured excellence, research and innovation, and it has acknowledged individuals and institutions committed to making the world a better place.

Laureates, who have come from every region, include demographers, family planning associations, researchers, policymakers, grass-roots organizations, development agencies and national leaders.

If you work in this field, you now have the opportunity to nominate worthy candidates for next year’s award: individuals or organizations who deserve recognition for the work they have done to expand our understanding of the impact of population and reproductive health issues on human well-being.

The winners will be selected by a 10-member Population Award Committee of the UN General Assembly, with UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, serving as its secretariat. Nominations of candidates are open to all United Nations Member States; intergovernmental bodies engaged in population-related activities; population-related non-governmental organizations having consultative status with the United Nations; university professors of population or related studies; heads of population-related institutions; and past laureates.

Nominations for the 2008 Award will be accepted through 1 December 2007. The recipient(s) of the Award will be announced in February 2008, and the Award will be presented by the Secretary-General in May 2008. Award winners receive a gold medal, a diploma and a monetary prize.
