78th UN General Assembly Side Event
The livestream will have International sign language interpretation and English Live Captioning.
The theme for this year’s 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all”. It is preceded by the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, which will mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals with high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to 2030.
These goals are not possible to achieve without empowering women and girls and creating a world of equal opportunities to ensure all 8 billion people on the planet can exercise their rights and choices and realize their full potential. The progress, including technological innovations, is growing at an exponential pace, but the benefits of the technological revolution are not equitable for all; lack of women’s inclusion in various stages of the design and development of innovative solutions and inadequate investment in research and innovation in women-centric solutions create a significant gap in gender-inclusive innovation.
In this context, the Government of Finland, the Government of Ghana, the Government of Norway, the Government of Vietnam, and UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, are organizing this high-level side event on the margins of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, titled “Building an equitable future through women-centric innovations”.
The 90 minute in-person event aims to amplify actions for closing the gender equity gaps in science, technology, and financing by bringing together stakeholders to discuss unified, global efforts to normalize gender equity in science and technology.
The event aims to showcase the best practices in the public and private sectors. It will highlight efforts to accelerate transformative norms and principles and introduce data-driven arguments and strategies for closing the gaps in women-focused and gender-inclusive solutions in science, technology, and financing by 2030, as envisioned by the UNFPA-led Equity 2030 Alliance.
