The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly marks a key milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The session – which will open on 10 September, with the first day of the high-level General Debate on 24 September – will focus on the theme: “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
At the Summit of the Future, to be held during the session on 22 – 23 September, world leaders will gather to address critical challenges in global governance. The summit aims to reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals and to the United Nations Charter, while enhancing cooperation and laying the foundation for a reinvigorated multilateral system. The summit will result in a Pact for the Future, aiming to bolster global cooperation and to adapt to current challenges effectively for the benefit of all.
The United Nations General Assembly is the main policy-making organ of the organization, providing a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the United Nations Charter. Each of the 193 Member States has an equal vote.
