UNFPA Lao People's Democratic Republic

The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a diverse country with more than 49 ethnic groups, many residing in hard-to-reach mountainous areas. The country has a high adolescent birth rate and the highest maternal mortality ratios in the region. Since 1976, UNFPA support has been integral in responding to the needs of women and the growing youth population. With 60 per cent of the country’s 6.25 million people under the age of 25, the focus is now on sexual reproductive health, needs, choices and rights as an entry point to sustainable development.
