Principles of Public Procurement
The guiding principles of public procurement are based on the concept of stewardship. Public sector organizations are the stewards of public funds, which have been provided in trust to fulfill specific purposes. A significant proportion of these funds are spent through procurement processes, for which there are many stakeholders, whether taxpayers, suppliers or beneficiaries. These stakeholders need to be assured that the funds are being utilized correctly and for the benefit of interest groups. It is these expectations that form the basis of public procurement principles:

Suppliers must comply with the UNFPA General Terms and Conditions, which contain specific provisions regarding child labor, mines and sexual exploitation.
UNFPA supports the UN Global Compact and encourages suppliers to participate. The Global Compact is a voluntary initiative covering human rights, labor rights and the environment.
